Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)
Physiotherapy for PoTS
Ann at Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing offers Specialist Physiotherapy and Integrative Somatic Therapy to support people living with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (PoTS), as well as those navigating persistent pain, fibromyalgia, ME/CFS & long covid.
Ann’s approach is trauma-informed and compassionate, she combines evidence-informed Specialist Physiotherapy & Integrative Somatic Therapy to support people in understanding, managing and changing the symptoms associated with PoTS. As well as tachycardia these symptoms may include fatigue, dizziness, palpitations, brain fog/cognitive difficulties, and reduced exercise tolerance.
PoTS is a form of dysautonomia, meaning it involves dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. A degree of dysautonomia is also part of ME/CFS, long covid, fibromyalgia, and persistent pain. Targeting autonomic regulation is, therefore, a key component of care across these conditions.

Treatment at Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing draws on current evidence, clinical expertise, and a compassionate trauma-informed person-centred approach to care. Ann works alongside you to co-create a tailored plan that meets you where you are and to support your journey towards improved function and wellbeing.
The mind and body are deeply interconnected, and best practice reflects this. At Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing, care is holistic and integrative, recognising the complex interplay between the body and mind. As part of working in an integrative way your story is deeply and compassionately listened to this helps to guide care.
Specialist rehabilitation for PoTS is paced and responsive, respecting your unique lived experience and it meets you where you are. Ann’s approach combines Specialist Physiotherapy with Integrative Somatic Therapy to support: nervous system regulation, restoration of safety and trust in the body, gradual re-engagement with meaningful and functional activities, and development of sustainable self-management strategies. If post exertion malaise (PEM) is present treatment is carefully adapted to reduce the risk of symptom flare-ups. This includes modified pacing, energy management techniques, and a gentler, restorative approach to activity.

- Tailored lifestyle advice that is known to help with PoTS - practical evidence-informed strategies that are known to help improve stability in PoTS
- Baseline awareness and pacing - identifying baselines for different types of activity to help with planning, prioritising and pacing of activities

- Screening for PEM - this is part of the initial and ongoing assessment, treatment is adjusted for this when it's present
- Understanding nervous system regulation - education and tailored techniques support autonomic nervous system regulation which is essential in managing PoTS & associated conditions
- Trauma-informed somatic & embodiment practices - gentle body-based practices that support body awareness and retrain the nervous system in a paced and safe way

- Gradual re-engagement in meaningful and functional activities - supporting safe re-engagement in personally meaningful and functional tasks with a focus on aspects like joy, purpose & ease
- Gently working with thoughts and emotions - using trauma-sensitive cognitive and somatic approaches to help acknowledge and respond to difficult thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed or needing to suppress them
